Signature Initiative to Mitigate Biological Threats in Africa (SIMBA)

Overview

Working Groups

SIMBA focuses on reducing biological threats in Africa by fostering collaboration between the Global Partnership members and African partners, notably the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). These partnerships aim to build sustainable, long-term capacities that strengthen health security and biological risk management. The initiative emphasizes the importance of coordinated action to address the complex and diverse biological threats facing the continent, including the potential acquisition and use of deadly pathogens by states of proliferation concern or bioterrorists.

The initiative’s objectives are structured around four interconnected working groups that collaborate with African partners to connect experts and to identify specific activities and projects aligned with the thematic priorities:

  • Biosafety and Biosecurity
  • National Frameworks
  • Surveillance and Epidemic Intelligence
  • Non-Proliferation

Through these joint efforts, SIMBA seeks to build impactful and sustainable biosecurity, biosafety and biological risk management capabilities in and for Africa.

The Signature Initiative to Mitigate Biological Threats in Africa (SIMBA), by the Global Partnership, aims to strengthen health security and non-proliferation across Africa by enhancing capacities to prevent, detect, and respond to biological threats.
